Petite Southern Belle Birdie
Birdie is a little girl, weighing all of 24 lbs. She has been very studious in getting herself ready for her forever family ever since she arrived from Louisiana in mid-September. She was not housebroken when she came to FBR, so we are certain that she lived her life completely outdoors. More evidence that she had never been inside a house before was her fear of the sounds of modern living -- but she is no longer afraid of office machine sounds, TV sets, phones, etc., because she now loves hanging out in the home office of her foster family! Her house training was similar to that of a puppy: taking her out every 2 hours and crating when she could not be watched. She is 90% house trained and tries very hard to tell you by standing by the door that she needs to go out. She is great about doing her business right away and then running back inside. Applicants please keep in mind she is little, with a little bladder, so a forever home with minimal alone time would be best for Birdie.
Gentle Baby Birdie
She arrived fearful but now she is trusting her foster parents and loves couch cuddle time. In fact, at night, Birdie loves it when her foster mom holds her like a baby, and she trustingly falls asleep in her arms. She is a very cuddly dog, so it's a good thing she is so petite! ;-) She sleeps in her crate quietly through the night and is happy to sit so that you can get her leash on to go for her morning walk. She patiently lets you groom her and clean her ears. She has a very soft, wash and wear coat. She has been treated for heartworms, and we can tell she is getting stronger every day -- her pulling to get to a scent is now that of a normal young Brittany! Birdie loves playing and chasing tennis balls, but unused to toys, she can be very destructive with any squeaky toys!
Let's Put Her Past Life Far Behind Her
Birdie was an owner surrender. The following is from the organization that pulled her from the kill shelter: "We were contacted by the local municipal shelter about an elderly man who turned in 5 dogs. The only reason given was that he was too old to hunt so he didn't need them anymore. We tagged all of them and pulled them the next day. They were extremely shy and fearful when we first got them, but they began coming around fairly quickly. They all lucked out when we were able to place them all with breed-specific rescues."
